Information on poltergeist activity

Poltergeist (German for noisy ghost) is a term used to describe a supposed spirit or ghost that manifests itself by moving and influencing inanimate objects.

Reports of poltergeist activity typically feature heavily on raps, bumps, thumps, knocks, footsteps, and bed-shaking, all without a discernible point of origin or physical reason for occurrence. Many accounts also detail objects being thrown about the room, furniture being moved, and even people being levitated. Though rare, a few reported poltergeists have been purported to speak.

Poltergeist phenomena are a focus of study within parapsychology. Parapsychologists define poltergeist activity as a type of uncontrolled psychokinesis. Recurrent Spontaneous Psychokinesis (RSPK) is a phrase suggested by parapsychologist William G. Roll to denote poltergeist phenomena.  The longevity and consistency between poltergeist reports (the earliest one details the raining of stones and bed shaking in ancient Egypt) has left the matter open for debate within the parapsychology community. "Poltergeists" a book by Alan guald shows records of 500 cases throught only a certain time frame in history and claims that this is only the tip of the ice-berg, and there may be thousands reported throughout history and many more unreported in the literature (e.g., the famous Bridgeport, Connecitcut poltergeist was never reported in the literature).

Ade's opinions on poltergeist activity

Jen's Opininon on poltergeist activity

The word “Poltergeist” literally translates from the German meaning noisy ghost; my dictionary also suggests it is a mischievous spirit.  That being the case then I could say that nearly all our investigations contain some form of poltergeist activity, be it loud banging sounds that appear to have no obvious source, or the feeling of having been physically touched or poked.

I have indeed found myself at a couple of different investigations feeling genuinely uncomfortable, and experiencing unwanted physical sensations.  At Stratford–upon-Avon, the first “professional” investigation the team went on (this was with our fellow investigators Ghost-n-Spectres) we had only been at the location for a few minutes and were sitting relaxing in the so-called “safety” of the hub when I suddenly felt a sharp burning sensation around my neck which I can only describe as the feeling of rope burn.  I asked their medium to look for marks explaining that it felt like the rope had been placed very roughly around my neck.  She seemed quite unsurprised and suggested it could be related phenomena whereby local witches were hanged in the area and I had somehow picked up on the trauma.

Could this kind of activity be classed as a poltergeist?  It is certainly mischievous to taunt people with these nasty sensations!

On a much later investigation I was just for a few minutes by myself in an area in which we have experienced quite a high level of different activity when suddenly I felt the atmosphere quite charged and I had the distinct feeling I was not alone.  I felt as though a spirit had come forward, had walked up beside me and there was a very unpleasant loud breath or muffled shout in my ear.  I really felt that this spirit knew I was alone and was taunting me.  I quickened my step and felt that it had actually followed me out of the room.  Boy I couldn’t get out of there fast enough!

Next time – and I sincerely hope there is a next time! – I will ensure I have some form of recording equipment with me, how fantastic would it have been if only I could have caught the sound of that breath in my ear to add to our increasing library of poltergeist-related phenomena.

Would love to experience poltergeist activity, wouldn't that be fantastic!

Tim's opinions on poltergeist activity

Poltergiests in a number of instances have been overhyped, due to Hollywood films and such like. There are a few that I have come across that have been fairly nasty but nothing extraordinarily evil.

The way I look at it, spirits are the same as people in life. Some are good and some are bad, but rarely do you come across someone who wants to do you harm without a good reason.

As yet, I have never come across anything really truely bad.
